If you're not familiar with Facebook, or you've only used Facebook for personal entertainment rather than business, you may wonder what the difference is between a Facebook profile and a Facebook page.

A Facebook profile is for individuals, not companies. The profile is under your personal name. You can post content about your company on your profile, but this is not the best way to market your company on Facebook. For privacy and security reasons, your Facebook profile should be set to be viewed only by your friends rather than the general public. This alone makes a profile a poor choice for business marketing, since you want your company information to be public.

A Facebook page is a page you create in Facebook for various purposes, such as your company, a brand of merchandise you like, an artist or band of which you're a fan, etc. A Facebook page is publicly viewable from not only other Facebook members, but non-members as well (unless you change the page's privacy settings, which you shouldn't do). Content that you post on the page is also indexed by search engines, which makes it great for marketing your company. The page is separate from your personal profile (although you access it from the same account and login as you do your personal profile), so people who "like" the page can only see what you post on the page, not the information on your profile. So content posted to your personal profile will not appear on your company page unless you specifically share it with the company page.

With a Facebook page you can assign other people to manage or create content for the page, which you cannot (and should not) do with a profile without giving them your Facebook username and password. This makes a page the obvious choice for companies with more than one employee who will be making changes to the page.

Facebook pages do not have "friends" the way your profile does. Instead, Facebook users "like" the page. Although anyone can view the page whether they've liked it or not, if they "like" the page, then any content you post on the page automatically appears in their news feed. Depending on how they have their privacy settings set up, the post may also appear on their friends' news feeds, or friends of friends. So one post on your page could conceivably reach hundreds or even thousands of Facebook users. This is one of the great benefits of social media marketing!

There is a third option, which is a Facebook Group. A group is ideal for communication within a group or community, for instance your local book club or townhouse community. In order for someone to join a Facebook group, someone in the group (usually the group administrator) must approve the request. Group content does not show up in search engines, whereas pages do. And posts made within a group do not show on the member's news feed like page posts do. For these reasons, a Facebook Group is not the ideal way to market your business.

There is often some confusion on how to log in to your company Facebook page. It's really quite simple. You log in to your regular Facebook account with the same username and password you use for your personal profile. After you log in, on the left side you will see a section for "Pages", and you can click on the page you created to access it. You can also access on the left side any Groups you've created or joined, Apps, Games, etc.

In summary, a Facebook page is a great marketing tool for your business. Out of the popular social media sites, which include Twitter, WordPress, Google Plus, YouTube, and Pinterest, Facebook is one of the easiest to use and has the farthest reach, particularly for local companies.
